In the 1940s and 1950s American culture became terribly dominant in Europe. The influence of flick films and the greatness of film stars set the fashion in manners, make-up, hair and garments. Women, girls, men and teens all desired look-alike copies of outfits, accessories and jewellery worn by the hottest screen idols. It was widely assumed that Hollywood glamour would rub off on you if you had the clothes and developed the look.

The Second World War left women craving for glamour which they were able to recreate themselves. Dressmaking Pattern manufacturers like Butterick, McCall’s, Simplicity, style along with mags such as girl, woman’s Own and girl’s Weekly all answered by making stylish dress patterns.

Just like now checks, spots, stripes, abstract designs, tiny flowers and giant florals all came out and in of fashion and as the styling that followed on from Dior’s New Look survived for ten years and more, change was shown mostly by the fabrics used. You can see a large range of skirt styles existed too, but almost always the top was darted and fitted to show off a little waist but with the skirt varying from flared to full and roomy to straight.

Brand name clothes were becoming so good and so preferred that style magazine bestowed the final accolade by commending Jaegar, Dereta, Brenner Marcus, Rima, and Mary Black to its readers.

Clothing coupons had been abolished in 1948 so that by 1952 garments were at last liberated. Dolman sleeves, swing back coats and stand away collars were popular. Skirts could be pencil slim or a mass of sun ray pleats.
