I remember hearing the tale of Peter Pan read to me by my father when I was four or 5. Likely it was both, and long before and long after, but the memories have stuck with me over the years. It is a great story about hope, religion and belief, values that I have cherished and withheld throughout my life.

Every year there’s the quest for the ideal Halloween costume, the most popular, the cutest, the sexiest, and the most unusual. We need the cutest costume for our child or child. We would like a costume for our youngsters that may excite their imaginations and give them confidence. And for an adult we either need to make a statement and be somebody else, or more macho or sexier.

Movie characters are always popular with the children. Girls like the princess costumes : Leia from Star Wars, Fiona from Shrek, Tinkerbell or any of the other Disney princesses. Bratz costumes are preferred also. Animal costumes are generally a hit.

Yesterday evening I watched the animated Disney film, Peter Pan. I watched it to see the costumes, but I ended up learning things from the characters and their costumes that stunned me.

The Peter Pan costume is green tights, a short green tunic with a zig zag hem, a brown belt holding a dagger, a green hat with a red feather and soft brown pointy shoes. Peter has bright red hair. Captain Hook is a villain — scheming, heartless, deceitful and malign. Captain Hook shows us that what counts is not what you seem like outside, but what you are inside. Hook’s actions show that if you put out hatred and torment, that is what you’ll get back. But they’ll only stay with you because they fear you ; they will never be your true pals.
